Coaches pick DWU eighth

After finishing in the top three the last two years, the Great Plains Athletic Conference coaches picked Dakota Wesleyan University to finish eighth in the baseball conference. The coaches poll was released last week and had Mount Marty picked to win the conference. Mount Marty should be picked one after winning the title a year ago. They return some great players from last year's team that finished one game away from the NAIA World Series.

The coaches pick is certainly not a science. In my first two years at DWU, the coaches haven't been real accurate at picking the champion. Polls and predictions do not mean a thing. That's why we play the games - to determine a champion.

Getting picked eighth does not bother me in the least bit. Two years ago we were picked near the bottom of the league but we finished third in the regular season before winning the GPAC tournament title. Although we are young and inexperienced this year, we're hoping to finish a little better than eighth place. Our goals as a team have nothing to do with where the coaches picked us to finish.
