February is a busy month

February will be a busy month for the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team. Although the weather isn't cooperating in Mitchell and other portions of the country, baseball season is just around the corner. The Tigers will open play Friday, February 25 in Marshall, Missouri. The Tigers are scheduled to play Missouri Valley in a four game set over the three-day weekend. The following week, the Tigers will be spending 11 days in Phoenix, AZ. The weather in Phoenix this week calls for sunny skies with highs near 70 degrees each day. Needless to say, we are getting excited for our southern trip.

In the meantime, we will continue to practice indoors six days a week with strength and conditioning workouts three mornings a week. Since our Metrodome trips in February were cancelled, we will find off days to give our players some rest, relaxation and study time. We are also hosting camps on the weekend. Our hitting and defense camp continues to be popular, while the one-day elementary camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 12.

Our baseball banquet with Rollie Fingers and Senator McGovern will be held Saturday, February 19 at 7 p.m. Our players are required to sell tickets for the event. Please support them and the once-in-a-lifetime event to see two great speakers.

As the excitement of the season grows, we continue to improve as a team, both on and off the field. We hope to be an exciting team to watch this spring. We thank you for your support and hope to see you at the field.

DWU captains

Thomas Pickett, Nick Cappuccilli and John Greicar are the captains of the 2011 DWU baseball team. The three seniors all will graduate this spring.

Pickett, a closer on the pitching staff a year ago, will be one of the team's top starters this season. He is a warrior and will be looked to for his leadership abilities this season.

Cappuccilli, a junior college transfer, is coming off shoulder surgery this past fall and hopes to be back on the mound in time for the conference opener. A free spirit, Capp (as he is called) keeps things loose in practice but is a strong supporter of hard work and dedication.

Greicar, from Grand Forks, ND, is also a junior college transfer entering his second year with the Tigers. He loves to play the game and is willing to help out each and every one of his teammates.

The captains are leading by example. The DWU team will represent each of our captains. The Tigers will be fundamentally sound, fierce, hard working and have a passion for the game.

Video footage of DWU Baseball Camps

The DWU baseball team hosted another session of its hitting and defense camp Sunday, along with a one-day pitching camp Saturday. Some footage of the camp is included in this post. The camp drew good numbers each day. The campers especially liked the 6-hour pitching camp which included bullpens, flat grounds, mental training, fundamental skills and drills, and evaluations. The two camps drew over 65 participants. Tiger captain Nick Cappucilli is seen having a good time in a couple of the videos.

DWU baseball camps busy

The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball camp season started Sunday, January 16 and nearly 60 youth players showcased their skills in the first session of the hitting and defense camp.

The numbers that registered surprised me. It goes to show that South Dakota youth players are serious about baseball, and that we are filling a need of the community. The players ranged from grades 7-12. The hitting and defense camps run five weeks on Sundays in January and February. It isn't too late to register your son or daughter for the camp. The price of $50 for all five sessions take into account missed sessions. It is as economical camp as you'll ever find.

The one-day pitching camp is set for this Saturday, January 22 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The camp is also open to students in grades 7-12. This camp will focus on all aspects of pitching including throwing progression, warm-up, strength & conditioning, bullpens and video analysis. This is a must for any student enthusiastic about the art of pitching. The price is $25 and includes a t-shirt.

Finally, our elementary camp is set for Saturday, February 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camp will focus on the basics of baseball in a fun and relaxed environment. Each camp will get a t-shirt, snacks and other items. The camp's fee is $30.

DWU players and coaches will be on hand at all the camps. We, as a program, feel a need to give back to the community some of the knowledge and expertise we have learned throughout the years. The camps are a win-win opportunity for all involved.
